Fatigue Management Policy

Ground Masters recognises that fatigue may impair an individual’s ability to perform work safely. It is the policy of Ground Masters to protect its workers, its assets, the community, and the environment in which it operates, from hazards arising from fatigue in the workplace.

Ground Masters acknowledges and accepts that fatigue may affect a person’s ability to work safely and it must be identified, assessed, and controlled like other hazards in the workplace. Ground Masters shall assist workers in managing fatigue, specifically, they will be made aware of and be monitored for signs of fatigue such as difficulty keeping the eyes in focus, poor or slow decision making, slow reaction time, drowsiness and irritability or aggressive behaviour.

Ground Masters will ensure that adequate resources are available to implement and comply with the Work Health and Safety legislation.

A person’s fatigue levels may be compromised by:

  • Spending long periods of time awake;

  • Inadequate or insufficient quality sleep over an extended period;

  • The type of work performed and work environment;

  • Workload, length of shift and previous shifts worked;

  • The time of day or night worked;

  • The time taken to travel to and from work;

  • Consumption of alcohol and/or drugs; and

  • Their general level of fitness and/or medical condition and stress (whether work or home related).

Whilst in charge of any vehicle all workers employed or contracted by Ground Masters have a responsibility to themselves and to other road users. To avoid driver fatigue, several methods are available to workers which include:

  • Staying physically fit;

  • Planning trips to avoid long periods of driving;

  • Taking frequent breaks; and

  • Having sufficient sleep or rest prior to long trips.

This policy shall be reviewed at regular and planned intervals including a review of its effectiveness.
